Not sure if you've ever read One Crowded Hour which is about Neil Davis, an Australian combat shooter who spent most of his career in Asia inc the Vietnam War. Written after his death as a series of letters home interspersed with his story its a really powerful book about conflict and how people deal with covering it. As well as being entertaining for the tales of an Aussie expat! Ironically he was killed by a stray bullet in a mini uprising on the streets of Bangkok in the 80s so you do spend most of the book dreading getting to the end as you know what's coming.
