FRIDAY-WEDNESDAY JUNE 6 - 11
DRACULA: Pages From a Virgin's Diary
Daily: 1:00, 3:00, 5:00, 7:00, 9:00
Guy Maddin makes films of such singular originality that it's no surprise that his version of Dracula is unlike any that came before. Hauntingly ethereal, sensuous and physical at the same time, Dracula: Pages From a Virgin's Diary is a black & white and blood red dream/nightmare of Victorian fears of sex and death. Based on the Royal Winnipeg Ballet's interpretation, choreographed by Mark Godden and set to the music of Gustav Mahler, Maddin's Dracula is a ravishingly erotic take that's part German Expressionist throwback, part goth wet dream, part deadpan black comedy, and part luscious melodrama. A.O. Scott of the New York Times described it, "Its characters may be dead, but the film itself is crazily, passionately alive." Zhang Wei-Qiang plays the titular count and Tara Birtwhistle his undead lover Lucy Westenra and their pas de deux is mesmerizing. David Moroni is vampire-hunting Dr. Van Helsing and Johnny A. Wright the young Jonathan Harker (whose backstory is told with brilliant brevity). Edited by deco dawson. Music from Mahler's Symphonies No. 1, 2, and 9. Directed by Guy Maddin. (2002) 73m.
