just spilled juice (apple mint) across laptop

it's still on. some ppl say to shut it off but the heat from this thing is prolly drying itself off faster than a hair dryer
plus, i dont own a fuckin hair dryer

how does one get the stickiness off the board n keys?
how do i remove the keys/board?

must go get juice off my foot and crotch now

I use rubbing alcohol to clean stuff off of my laptop, but I've never spilled on it, not sure how you get it out from under the keys.

You need to

- Stop the laptop immediately
- If you know how to, remove the laptop keyboard keys one by one and clean them up with isopropilic alcohol (the one that was used to clean video and cassette magnetic heads) or any other non-corrosive or agressive cleaner
- Also clean the underkeys surface

If you spelt a lot of juice (like half a glass) your best shot is simply taking it to a Genius Bar to have it cleaned since it's quite possible that some of the juice has gone to the motherboard

Well if most got on you is alright, it should be fine.

The thing is that any kind of non-pure 100% H2O has minerals and other stuff so if it dries on the motherboard it can short-circuit it up, most of the time this does not happen but as said, the more liquid the higher chances you have.

Found a link where they teach how to clean the keys, it's quite tricky indeed, I would recommend that when you do this you shut it down and remove the battery.

it's been 10 minutes. shouldnt the thing start fizzling n shorting out by now?

If it has to happen you have higher chances that it'll happen when the liquid dries up and leaves some dry residue on the motherboard.

What they said. ESD is not your friend.

When this happened to me I just let the heat dry it...I can no longer use my 3 nor F5 or F6 keys.

Seriously, turn it off and clean it as per [livejournal.com profile] derleiermann's suggestion.

It will run under water, swimming pool or shower one (LOL)... You can remove the whole keyboard easily on a Mac ; on a PC, you can unclip the keys just using a lever effect from a flat screwdriver.

i am sure my friends who have dead macs would find this not to be true.

i did not see an easy way to remove the whole keyboard...

If you have a Mac, it is the two little square keys in the upper part of the keyboard, left between "esc" and "F1", right between F11 and F12, which enable to unclip the keyboard.

i don't seeee them on mine

Seem you have a recent version of Mac where the keyboard is not removable, but where the keys are directly clipped in square alveoles of the plastic horizontal table.

In this case, to remove the whole cover, you have to unscrew the tiny lateral screws that are accessible laterally, and for the back ones, the laptop in shut position. You need a very tiny crux screwdriver.

If you want to unclip individually the keys, just know they are visible plastic caps sometimes clipped underneath on crossed little plastic legs, very similar to the cross legs of a camping foldable table. You may risk yourself to unclip one of this caps with the tip of a knife, blade quasi horizontal, and grabbing only the edge of the cap (very thin plastic lame) and not the cross structure underneath, then having a soft torque upward. Try a key you never use! You will understand the mode of fixation, but the reinsertion is sometimes awkward! Be as careful as if you were making up your eyelashes...

Little add. I have just sacrified myself on the most useful key of my keyboard, the letter "E". Easy to unclip, and easy to replace, for there are four little separate "bolts", metallic ones, which re-clip themselves easily into place : different system than the cross one. Good luck for 80 keys! Be careful if the juice has glued the fixations. If the little plastic central bolt which makes the key command and is mounted on spring is glued, and if you cannot free it with alcohol, then the only solution, da cappo, is to unscrew the whole cover to clean the keyboard without dipping your hardware.

it sounds like you already have this well in hand, but I second rubbing alcohol . . . and q-tips (or the like).

I've cleaned many a keyboard with alcohol and q-tips in my day, but if stuff gets in the innards, thats all bad . . .

best of luck.

You in town? If it doesn't work in the morning bring it up tomorrow and I can help you fix it you need. I used to work on laptops a looong time ago.
