named Mountbatten.

Actually he was Louis Francis Albert Victor Nicholas, 1st Earl Mountbatten of Burma; great-grandson of Queen Vicky and uncle of Philip Mountbatten, duke of Edinburgh; Vice Admiral and Supreme Allied Commader of Southeast Asia.

He was known for many things and I got to see some film clips of him yesterday in my WW2 class. He was the one who accepted the formal surrender of the Japanese in Singapore.

After WW2, he dealt with India and Pakistan and handled the terms concerning separation and later independence for the two countries. Even later in the 60's h became governor of the Isle of Wight and lord lieutenant in the 70's.

I went to Europe with my family just before 1980 came around. I remember this one day, even though I was young, because the airport security decided to detain me and my brother for a more thorough search. No idea why but I remember my mom being kinda pissed off and my dad stressed out. We had just left a crowded Heathrow (so says my dad) and had finally arrived in Ireland via Aer Lingus. I remember Aer Lingus... white plane green clover even then.

Ireland was very green. and very wet. dont go out for chinese when you're there. i remember it didnt taste like home. (i did go to a chinese place when i was in arizona once with my family. it was even worse.) Well anyways, the country was wet, but damn it was green. And cold too. The kind of cold that you feel inside and you can imagine your bones shivering inside of your really pale skin (due to lack of blood circulating. even the blood cells were too cold to do their jobs).

oh well. some days it was just so pretty there it didn't matter. the fields were green and covered with piles of peet. and some were really flowery too dammit. all sorts of colors and a lot of damn green green green.

i also remember going to bunratty castle not too far from the Shannon Airport and walking around the village there. i got sick and threw up on the village path. Maybe it was the booze my dad was passing over my way when we warmed ourselves inside of Dirty Nellies. county claire is really damn pretty besides having some of my leftovers. i'm sure someone has cleared off the path many times over since then.

we drove around a lot. when we left the airport we got into our rental and drove to the home we were staying at. The radio played the same familiar song that was on the air before we left for the continent for a couple of weeks prior. The home we were staying at was a B&B and a couple of teenage girls would always turn the radio up when a catchy piano intro started playing. Soon enough the voice of bob geldoff could be heard wanting to shoot down days of the week n such. i recall them shoving a record under my nose. (remember? those black circular things that we used for listening to music?) "Isn't he DREAMY??? achh! ooch! he is he is!" I was too young for that kinda stuff.

The day we chose to travel back to Ireland, Louis Mountbatten was relaxing on his boat, the Shandow V, up in County Sligo off the Mullaghmore coast. About an hour after we landed at Shannon Airport, the first Earl Mountbatten of Burma, last Viceroy of indea, and supreme Allied Commander in SE Asia during World War 2 was assassinated by a 50 pound remote controlled IRA bomb.

That same day, the 27th of August, 1979, the Massacre at Warrenpoint aka the 'narrow water bombing' also took place.

heh
