SECOND CLASS VETERANS
11/09 5pm, 11/10 2pm (26:28) (CC) (DVS)
This program profiles Filipino American photographer Rick Rocamora and his tireless efforts to document and reveal the little-known story of Filipino World War II veterans who live in the United States. Since 1992, Rick's powerful black and white photos have been critical in educating the public about the lives of these American heroes. The show also reveals the veterans' dramatic struggle for military benefits first promised and later rescinded by the U.S. Government. In America, many of the veterans often live in extreme poverty in hopes of qualifying for the benefits they have been denied thus far. We meet veterans such as Magdaleno Duenas, a likeable 87-year-old war hero who lives alone. Rick has developed a close bond with Mr. Duenas, as well as many other veterans. This program is a touching tribute to the veterans and what they've sacrificed in honor of the United States.
NAPOLEON, AN EMPIRES SPECIAL #102 MASTERING LUCK
11/10 10:30pm (56:46*) (CC) (DVS)
This episode charts Napoleon's ascent to absolute power, from victorious general to first consul to emperor of France. The program describes his achievements -- from the Napoleonic Code and the Bank of France to bridges, roads and canals -- as well as the tyrannical nature of his rule and the violent opposition of most of Europe.
INDEPENDENT LENS #505 BE GOOD, SMILE PRETTY

This personal documentary chronicles the filmmaker's struggle to know and grieve for the father she never knew, a soldier who died in Vietnam when she was a baby. Through her journey of discovery, and those of her family and her father's friends, the film sheds light on the more than 20,000 Americans whose fathers were killed in Vietnam -- and on those who continue to lose parents in war. By Tracy Droz Tragos.
