A Lecture by RON ATHEY and others on 'VICTIM ART'

Please join us for the final public event of Ron Athey's residency in the Centre for the History of the Emotions at Queen Mary, University of London.

TITLE: 'Victim Art': Plague, Performance and Metaphor

In 1994, dance critic Arlene Croce famously refused to review Bill T. Jones' performance of Still/Here, proclaming "victim art" to be unreviewable. Diamanda Galas mounted the monumental Plague Mass while Susag Sontag wrote that cholera was the last bona fide plague. Athey will discuss his ACT UP-era torture trilogy and 'post-AIDS' work. Guests Dr. Dominic Johnson and Dr. Catherine Silverstone (QMUL Drama) will join him in looking at a range of work by artists including Bob Flanagan, Hannah Wilke, Scott O'Hara and David Wojnarowicz. Athey will also interview a younger generation of "Sick" artists on how illness is written on their bodies and their performance work.

Confirmed speakers:
Ron Athey
Dominic Johnson
Catherine Silverstone
Martin O'Brien
Brian Lobel

The event is FREE but booking is essential.
RSVP to Dr. Dominic Johnson at d.f.johnson@qmul.ac.uk
